I am not happy that fics beginning with these paragraphs are longer than my [livejournal.com profile] blind_go entries. =(

Tsutsui prepared their meal without much hurry. It was already two in the afternoon, but then they've been open till six this morning because of the King's last client, so there was no hurry to get on with the new day. He just couldn't stand the heat and sticky sheets much longer, and he'd slid off the bed to find what he could eat in the kitchen.

Done with reheating the leftover yakiniku from last night, Tsutsui went to the bathroom to clean up. It was only when he saw the gleam of silver around his neck that he remembered the King's odd gesture around midnight.

When you become a shinigami, you were supposed to forget the things that seemed so important to humans. Familial relations, love, money, all those were to be subjugated under the desire to do your duty.

Ideally, that would have been the case, but then all shinigami are assigned to work in Shokan which was very much like the human world, so people sometimes forget all about this. They are with friends, deal with wage cuts at an almost weekly basis due to Tatsumi's vehement budget adjustments, and experience the horror that is Watari's lab exploding at least once every quarter.

Whatever Yamamoto does, he is always just a little bit something. Either he is a little bit too late, too casual, too humorous, but he never catches Gokudera at just the right time to open up. Opening up is a strange way to phrase what is going on between him and the other boy - for Gokudera emotions are always simmering just below the surface, and it is obvious in his every action and expression. But the moment he looks at Yamamoto those long eyelashes drop down and shutter the truth from the one person who wants to know the truth the most.

Gokudera sees him as a rival, a huge block to being Tsuna's right-hand man, but Yamamoto thinks otherwise. More often than not it is Gokudera who's holding his potential back, with his petty fights and overzealous attempts at being useful to the tenth. Attempts that always lead to him coming back injured. Doesn't he realize that after he is done with his report Tsuna always looks at him with a pained look of one not sure what he does to deserve such loyalty. The same cycle repeats, over and over again, for nearly a decade.

I'm missing an Isumi fic there :D
