Keeping house, memes

The bookshelves are currently beyond me I can't decide how to group the books - alphabetical? By genre? Do I do alphabetical by genre and let all hell break loose? My bookshelves are two layers deep of books, and I still have more to stuff in. Around a fifth of the books here I haven't read yet - mostly on the fantasy/sci-fi side which I promised to get into. Why is it I've finished practically all of my romance novels, and not sci-fi? *headdesks*

I have five piles of books on the floor: fantasy, mystery, references, classics/romances, and the I have not yet read it pile. Now where to place what in which!

The poem/song meme? Put your MP3 player on shuffle, and write down the first line of the first twenty songs. Post the poem that results. The first line of the twenty-first is the title. I believe I just uncovered a broken up love story that turned philosophical in the end.

I don't wanna talk about the things we've gone through

Vacate is the word...vengeance has no place so near to her

Hey God, I'm just a little man got a wife and family
You know that it would be untrue
Easy lover
How I tried to catch you while you ran ahead of me
Left a good job in the city

Sometimes in the spring time
I remember when I found out about chemistry
It seems like every day’s the same
The line of traffic comes to a standstill

Just in case, I will leave my things packed
Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk
Once upon a time

Turn Around
I built another temple to a stranger
I could even save the love. (translation of the original lyrics: 愛情だって救えた)

Nobody on the road
You say life is a dream where we can't say what we mean
On this coldest of January nights.

Wishlist! I've actually gone through some of your wishlists, and was lucky enough to find a few of your requests to be workable.

STEP ONE
- Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

- If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you. [Note: Your home address is not required!]

- Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, or link to this post (it'll be public) so that the holiday joy will spread.

STEP TWO
- Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:

- If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call. There are no guarantees with this project, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

1. World Peace. (Maybe if we think about it hard enough, it'll come true!)
2. A Magritte posted any of the ff: Castle in the Pyrenees, Empire of Lights, Treason of Images, This is Not an Apple or The Red Model. For cheapskates, getting me a Granado Espada poster will do~♥ In the absence of either (because d-dammit, IAH doesn't distribute posters anymore T^T) manga or anime posters will be good too.
3. Do some book crossing or donate books to the local library in your area! Because I want you all to share your love for books!
4. Fanfics or fanart for fandoms like Saint Seiya (SAINT SEIYA SAINT SEIYA SAINT SEIYA MAKE ME DM/APHRO OR JUST THE SPECTERS, AND I WILL SELL MY SOUL FOR YOU), Ayatsuri Sakon, Tantei Gakuen Q, Labyrinth (!!), YuYu Hakusho, and yes, Oofuri. I had to include a sports series in the mix. If you're overwhelmed and you're not in them, a non-smutty Ogata or a smutty Snupin ficlet will make my day, any day.
5. Music. I've been listening to a lot of Imogen Heap and The Blue Nile lately. Think you can convert me to ska or death metal or whatnot? Maybe not the death metal part thankyouverymuch. I'd also like to hear what song reminds you the most of the 80's and 90's, as we're into that sort of music right now in the office. I blame the eighties retrospective to several fanfics referencing Sweet Child of Mine and You give love a bad name. :D
6. Links to crafty things, or something that interested you for the day. :D It could be a video, a flash game, or an article you thought you'd like to share~ (I'm such an easy person to please.)
7. That's it. Thanks for playing!

Any preference for YYH or Tantei Gakuen Q fics? Those last three animanga series are all favorites of mine. XD

I sort books by _size_...

[identity profile] blue-cage.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
I got them into groups then sorted by size - the hardbound ones went to the back while the paperbacks went to the front row, I love how it looks right now, though once I get home tomorrow I don't doubt I'll have more books to put in the shelf. *sighs*

*laughs and snuggles* I don't have that many books anymore. I've moved to buying e-books whenever possible. The only books I actually own are writing how-to books (because I mark them and there are TONS of post-its sticking out), manga/doujinshi, and gifts or books I bought from Amazon.com Marketplace because that's the cheapest way to get them (and had people ship them to me).

[identity profile] blue-cage.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm always in secondhand bookstores when I can, and so far I've amassed a surprising number of books I think I want to read, but then the next time I go there I get even more of those, and they sort of - pile up. ^^; I've begun to collect manga since a comics shop started near where I work, and the collection is growing rapidly. I average 3-6 manga a month.^^;;;

*laughs* Yeah, well, I want to have room for me in this apartment, so I've been VERY stringent about no-books-unless-they're-e-books. I wish more e-books would come out faster.

[identity profile] blue-cage.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
It must be difficult to have to resist the impulse to buy books! D: I wish you more luck in getting those e-books!

♥ Man oh man, you and I both know it. T_T

[identity profile] blue-cage.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Ariri-nee, who only recently got a flat in the city, used to have some of her friends store her books for safekeeping. Maybe that will work out for you as well?

In Tokyo, though, this is a problem--I wouldn't ask anyone to take on my stuff for storage when space is at such a premium in Japan. ^_^

[identity profile] jactinglim.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
call me nuts but I just arrange books by height/size XD tallest/biggest in the back, smallest in front, but series stay together in chronological order.

[identity profile] blue-cage.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
But what if the series is incomplete, or you have hardbound editions and paperbacks of that series? orz

[identity profile] jactinglim.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
basta series chronological lagi :) as for sizes, cumulative XD hehe I'd arrange your books for you but you'd need to pay meeeeh =))

[identity profile] blue-cage.livejournal.com 2008-12-13 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
Nuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu I has no monies, unless you accept cupcakes instead of monies? :D

[identity profile] jactinglim.livejournal.com 2008-12-13 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
make 'em chocolate and we has a deal =))

[identity profile] mierin-lanfear.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Books comprising a series are usually grouped together. The non-series books I arrange according to subject matter: chem, non-chem but science-related, everything else.

Sometimes, under "everything else" I group books by the same author, but I don't arrange them alphabetically. More often than not, they're arranged by cover-quality: hardbound, trade-book, paperback.

THEN they're packed in plastic crates and stacked in a corner of the house. We have no more shelf space, alas!

[identity profile] blue-cage.livejournal.com 2008-12-13 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
I hate it when the shelf space runs out! I used to have books stuck in a storage box but we somehow managed to get more shelves installed in my room - instant storage space.

But we're quickly running out of shelf space at the rate I buy books. It's a vicious cycle. :\
